Some members of the media have alleged that external criticism of Nikole Hannah-Jones, including criticism by the Martin Center, influenced the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustee’s decision not to confer tenure. That is not correct. The Board of Trustees made its decision prior to the Journalism School’s announcement that Hannah-Jones had been hired and prior to the Martin Center’s criticism. When Hannah-Jones accepted the position, it was as a non-tenured professor.
